Purpose: CSF inflammation in subtypes of antibody-defined autoimmune encephalitis (AE) ranges in intensity from moderate to severe. In a retrospective, cross-sectional study, we characterized CSF findings in Chinese patients with anti-N-methyl-D-aspartate receptor encephalitis (NMDAR-E), anti-leucine-rich glioma-inactivated 1 encephalitis (LGI1-E), and anti-gamma aminobutyric acid-B receptor encephalitis (GABABR-E). Patients and Methods: The AE cases, including 102 NMDAR-E, 68 LGI1-E and 15 GABABR-E, were included. CSF inflammatory parameters consisted primarily of CSF leukocytes, oligoclonal bands (OCBs), and CSF/serum albumin ratios (QAlb). Ten serum cytokines were evaluated in order to classify AE subtypes. Results: 88% of NMDAR-E, 80% of GABABR-E, and 51% of LGI1-E patients had aberrant CSF features. In NMDAR-E, the CSF leukocyte count, CSF protein concentration, and age-adjusted QAlb were significantly higher than in LGI1-E, but did not differ from GABABR-E. Blood-CSF barrier dysfunction was less common in NMDAR-E patients with >40 years old. On admission, inflammatory CSF response was more prevalent in NMDAR-E patients with a higher CASE score. With age <60 years, CSF inflammatory changes were less frequent in LGI1-E patients, but more common in GABABR-E patients. MCP-1, IL-10, IL-1ß, and IL-4 were potential classifiers for NMDAR-E, LGI1-E, and GABABR-E, and correlated substantially with CSF leukocyte count and QAlb. Conclusion: Subtype-specific patterns are formed by the various inflammatory CSF parameters in NMDAR-E, LGI1-E, and GABABR-E, and their correlation with disease severity, age, and disease duration. CSF inflammatory characteristics associated with MCP-1, IL-10, IL-1ß, and IL-4 may be potential immunopathogeneses targeting markers for these AE subtypes.

Sexual minority men (SMM) in Zambia face significant challenges including stigma, discrimination, and mental health issues, which further impact their HIV-related risk behaviors. This study aimed to investigate the associations between enacted stigma, substance abuse, HIV-related behaviors, and mental health (i.e., depression, anxiety, and post-traumatic stress disorder [PTSD] symptoms) among SMM in Zambia. SMM aged 18-35 years who reported having multiple and/or concurrent sexual partners or low and/or inconsistent condom use in the past three months were recruited from four districts in Zambia between February and November 2021. Participants completed an anonymous interviewer-administered survey. Key variables of interest were compared between participants with higher vs. lower levels of enacted stigma. Independent samples t-tests were used for continuous variables, and chi-squared tests were used for categorical variables. A total of 197 eligible SMM participated in the study (mean age = 24.41 years). Participants with a higher level of enacted stigma showed a higher level of anxiety symptoms (χ2 = 12.91, p ≤ .001), PTSD symptoms (χ2 = 7.13, p < .01), tobacco use (χ2 = 10.47, p < .01), cannabis use (χ2 = 5.90, p < .05), and a higher number of sexual partners (t = 1.99, p < .05) in the past three months. Stigma reduction interventions may help mitigate substance abuse, HIV-related behaviors, and adverse mental health outcomes among SMM in Zambia. Health care providers, especially psychiatric-mental health nurses, can incorporate strategies for recognizing and addressing stigma into their practice through training and integrate multiple resources to create an inclusive and non-judgmental environment for SMM to improve their well-being.

To ensure care continuity during the COVID-19 pandemic, telehealth has been widely implemented in human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) care. However, participation in and benefits from telehealth were unequal. This study aims to assess the willingness of people living with HIV (PWH) and HIV care providers to use telehealth and perceptions of the future role of telehealth. In-depth interviews with 18 PWH and 10 HIV care providers from South Carolina assessed their willingness to use telehealth, their perspectives on the future of telehealth in HIV care, and recommendations to improve telehealth. Interviews were analyzed using thematic analysis. Most PWH were female (61%), Black/African American (67%), and non-Hispanic (78%). Most PWH (61%) and all providers had used telehealth for HIV care. Most PWH and all providers reported being willing to use or (re-)consider telehealth HIV care services in the future. Providers suggested that telehealth is most suitable for routine HIV care encounters and for established, clinically stable, generally healthy PWH. Attitudes toward telehealth were heterogeneous, with most interviewees valuing telehealth similarly or superior to in-person care, yet >20% perceiving it less valuable. Recommendations to improve telehealth included multilevel strategies to address challenges across four domains: technology, the virtual nature of telehealth, administrative processes, and the sociodemographic profile of PWH. Telehealth in HIV care is here to stay; however, it may not yet be suitable for all PWH and all care encounters. Decision processes related to telehealth versus in-person care need to involve providers and PWH. Existing telehealth options require multilevel adjustments addressing persistent challenges.

BACKGROUND: Substance use has become a critical health concern during the COVID-19 pandemic, and emerging attention has been paid to people with the persistent symptoms of COVID-19 (COVID-19 long haulers) due to their high vulnerability. However, scant research has investigated their substance use and relevant psychosocial factors. The current study was to (1) examine substance use behaviors (i.e., legal drug use, illicit drug use, and non-medical use of prescription drugs); and (2) assessed their associations with psychiatric symptoms (i.e., depression, anxiety, and post-traumatic stress disorder) and psychosocial factors (i.e., personal mastery and social support) among COVID-19 long haulers. METHODS: In January-March 2022, 460 COVID-19 long haulers (50% female), with an average age of 32, completed online surveys regarding their demographics, substance use, psychiatric symptoms, and psychosocial factors. RESULTS: In the past three months, the most commonly used or non-medically used substances were tobacco (82%) for legal drugs, cocaine (53%) for illicit drugs, and prescription opioids (67%) for prescription drugs. Structural equation modeling suggested that psychiatric symptoms were positively associated with substance use behaviors (ßs = 0.38 to .68, ps < 0.001), while psychosocial factors were negatively associated with substance use behaviors (ßs = -0.61 to -0.43, ps < 0.001). CONCLUSION: Substance use is common in COVID-19 long haulers and psychiatric symptoms are the risk factors. Personal mastery and social support appear to offer protection offsetting the psychiatric influences. Substance use prevention and mental health services for COVID-19 long haulers should attend to personal mastery and social support.

BACKGROUND: Aberrant DNA methylation occurs commonly during pathogenesis of neuroimmunological diseases and is of clinical value in various encephalitis subtypes. However, knowledge of the impact of DNA methylation changes on pathogenesis of leucine-rich glioma-inactivated 1 (LGI1) antibody encephalitis remains limited. METHODS: A total of 44 cytokines and 10 immune checkpoint moleculars (ICMs) in the serum of patients with LGI1 encephalitis and healthy donors (HDs) were measured to evaluate the association of them with clinical parameters. Genome-wide DNA methylation profiles were performed in peripheral blood mononuclear cell (PBMC) from LGI1 encephalitis patients and HDs using reduced representation bisulfite sequencing (RRBS) and validated for the methylation status by pyrosequencing. MicroRNA profiles were acquired in serum exosome by small RNA sequencing. Targeted cytokines expression was assessed at the presence or absence of miR-2467-5p in PBMCs and the culture media, and the binding of miR-2467-5p and its targeted genes was validated by luciferase assay. RESULTS: There existed significant difference in 22 cytokines/chemokines and 6 ICMs between LGI1 encephalitis patients and HDs. Decreased PDCD1 with increased ICAM1 could predict unfavorable prognosis in one-year follow-up for LGI1 encephalitis patients. Fifteen of cytokines/chemokines and ICMs presented DNA-methylated changes in the promoter and gene body using RRBS in which five were verified as methylation status by pyrosequencing, and the methylation level of CSF3, CCL2, and ICAM1 was conversely associated with their expression in PBMCs. By combining RRBS data with exosome-derived microRNA sequencing, we found that hypomethylated-driven hsa-miR-2467-5p presented elevated expression in serum exosomes and PBMCs in LGI1 encephalitis. Mechanically, miR-2467-5p significantly induced reduced expression of CSF3 and PDCD1 by binding with their 3`UTR while enhanced CCL15 expression, but not significantly correlated with peripheral blood CD19 + B cell proportion of LGI1 encephalitis patients. CONCLUSIONS: Our results provided convincing evidence for DNA methylation changes, microRNA profiles in serum exosome for LGI1 encephalitis, and we also identified several novel cytokines related to clinical features in which some represented epigenetic modification of methylated-driven pattern and microRNA modulation. Our study contributed to develop treatment for epigenetic pathogenesis in LGI1 encephalitis.

BACKGROUND: Artificial intelligence (AI)-based chatbots can offer personalized, engaging, and on-demand health promotion interventions. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this systematic review was to evaluate the feasibility, efficacy, and intervention characteristics of AI chatbots for promoting health behavior change. METHODS: A comprehensive search was conducted in 7 bibliographic databases (PubMed, IEEE Xplore, ACM Digital Library, PsycINFO, Web of Science, Embase, and JMIR publications) for empirical articles published from 1980 to 2022 that evaluated the feasibility or efficacy of AI chatbots for behavior change. The screening, extraction, and analysis of the identified articles were performed by following the PRISMA (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses) guidelines. RESULTS: Of the 15 included studies, several demonstrated the high efficacy of AI chatbots in promoting healthy lifestyles (n=6, 40%), smoking cessation (n=4, 27%), treatment or medication adherence (n=2, 13%), and reduction in substance misuse (n=1, 7%). However, there were mixed results regarding feasibility, acceptability, and usability. Selected behavior change theories and expert consultation were used to develop the behavior change strategies of AI chatbots, including goal setting, monitoring, real-time reinforcement or feedback, and on-demand support. Real-time user-chatbot interaction data, such as user preferences and behavioral performance, were collected on the chatbot platform to identify ways of providing personalized services. The AI chatbots demonstrated potential for scalability by deployment through accessible devices and platforms (eg, smartphones and Facebook Messenger). The participants also reported that AI chatbots offered a nonjudgmental space for communicating sensitive information. However, the reported results need to be interpreted with caution because of the moderate to high risk of internal validity, insufficient description of AI techniques, and limitation for generalizability. CONCLUSIONS: AI chatbots have demonstrated the efficacy of health behavior change interventions among large and diverse populations; however, future studies need to adopt robust randomized control trials to establish definitive conclusions.

OBJECTIVE: We aimed to investigate levels of cytokines/chemokines and immune checkpoint molecules in patients with anti-leucine-rich glioma-inactivated 1 (LGI1) encephalitis. METHODS: The study recruited 12 patients with anti-LGI1 encephalitis and six non-inflammatory controls from the Qilu Hospital of Shandong University treated between January 2019 and December 2020. Serum levels of 30 cytokines/chemokines and 10 checkpoint molecules were measured in participants of both the groups. RESULTS: In contrast to those in the control group, 24 cytokines/chemokines and 5 immune checkpoint molecules were differentially expressed in patients with anti-LGI1 encephalitis, with 14 cytokines being upregulated and 10 being downregulated. There were 1033 enriched biological processes and 61 enriched Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes signaling pathways. CONCLUSION: A wide range of cytokines/chemokines and immune checkpoint molecules are implicated in immune regulation in anti-LGI1 encephalitis, indicating that they may serve as important targets in the development and treatment of the disease.

Background: Neutrophil extracellular traps (NETs) have been found to play an important role in several nervous system diseases. However, their role in anti-N-methyl-D-aspartate receptor (NMDAR) encephalitis remains unclear. The purpose of this study was to examine the possible role of NETs in anti-NMDAR encephalitis. Materials and methods: Eleven patients with anti-NMDAR encephalitis and ten healthy participants were enrolled. Plasma NETs levels were detected using an immunofluorescence assay and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Additionally, we examined 10 plasma cytokines in patients with anti-NMDAR encephalitis and analyzed the correlation between citrullinated histone 3 levels and cytokine release. Results: Peripheral blood neutrophils from patients with anti-NMDAR encephalitis were more susceptible to NET generation. When compared with controls, cases of anti-NMDAR encephalitis showed elevated levels of IL-1 α, IL-6, IL-8, IL-13, MCP-1, and TNF-α (p < 0.05). Moreover, IL-6, IL-8, and TNF-α levels were positively correlated with H3Cit levels. Conclusion: We provide evidence that NETs may play a role in anti-NMDAR encephalitis, providing clues for elucidation of the pathogenesis of this disease.

Background: Given that the combination of multiple antibodies in autoimmune encephalitis (AE) is rare and its clinical significance is unclear, this study aimed to investigate the clinical characteristics and significance of overlapping multiple anti-neuronal antibodies in patients with AE. Methods: We conducted a retrospective analysis of the clinical characteristics, treatment, and prognostic details of 22 patients with multiple coexisting antibodies from multiple clinical centers in China. Results: Among the 276 patients who were AE antibody-positive, 22 (7.97%) had two or more antibodies. Among the 22 patients with coexisting AE-related antibodies, 14 patients (63.63%) were combined of cell surface and intracellular antibody, and the remaining 8 patients (36.36%) were detected to be cell surface antibody positive only. The main symptoms of the 22 patients in this cohort included fever, seizures, memory impairment, cognitive decline, and sleep disorders. Five (22.73%) patients had tumors, among whom four had small-cell lung cancers, and one had mediastinal tumors. A total of 20 patients were treated with steroids and intravenous immunoglobulin, and 18 showed varying degrees of symptomatic improvement after first-line immunotherapy. Three patients died of tumor progression or chemotherapy complications. Conclusion: The coexistence of multiple anti-neuronal antibodies in patients with AE may cause a superimposition and diversification of clinical manifestations. Combined paraneoplastic antibody positivity may be suggestive of an underlying malignancy.

BACKGROUND: Anti-gamma-aminobutyric-acid B receptor (anti-GABABR) encephalitis is a rare form of autoimmune limbic encephalitis (ALE) that is closely associated with tumor comorbidity. The purpose of this study is to identify the expressive pattern of cytokines/ chemokines and soluble immune checkpoint molecules (sICMs) in anti-GABABR encephalitis in order to evaluate the clinical condition and provide new treatment options. METHODS: A total of 40 cytokines/chemokines and 10 sICMs in the serum of 10 patients with anti-GABABR encephalitis and eight controls were measured. The differentially expressed cytokines/chemokines and sICMs were selected to explore the correlations with disease prognosis, CSF routine and antibody titers. RESULTS: Eight cytokines/chemokines were found to be more abundant in patients than in healthy donors (HDs), while 14 were found to be less abundant in patients. In terms of sICMs, patients' serum contained higher level of soluble ICOS and ICOSL but lower level of soluble CD86. Unfavorable prognosis was associated with high serum level of PDGFB, IL-17A, and soluble ICOSL but not with low levels of IL-4. Increased levels of IL-17A, CCL15, and soluble ICOS were found frequently in the patients with CSF-exclusive OCBs, while soluble ICOSL and CCL24 expression was lower in these patients. High levels of IL-1 F2 and TCA-3 were correlated with the presence of tumors in patients. CONCLUSION: The majority of patients with anti- GABABR encephalitis had an unfavorable prognosis in one year of follow-up. Serum PDGFB, IL-17A, IL-4 and soluble ICOSL level were associated with the poor clinical outcomes in one-year follow up.

A mechanical-chemical process is proposed to recover the iron phosphate residue(IPR)of spent lithium iron phosphate(LFP)after lithium extraction. In this process, the IPR was pretreated by ball-milling and leached with the sulfuric acid solution. The results showed that, under the optimized ball-milling conditions (a mass ratio of the stainless-steel-ball to material to water of 2:1:2.5, a milling time of 20 min), the maximum particle size of IPR decreased from 34.265 um to 13.102 um, the specific surface increased from 11.41 m2/g to 13.74 m2/g, and the cell volume distortion rate could reach 0.331 %. Under the optimized leaching conditions (a temperature of 333 K, a concentrated acid-to-material ratio of 0.46 mL/g, a liquid-to-solid ratio of 5:1 mL/g, and a stirring speed of 600 rpm), the leaching efficiency of iron phosphate could reach 98 %. The kinetic study indicated that the leaching was controlled by diffusion and chemical reaction with the apparent activation energy of 29 kJ/mol. The dissolution-precipitation phase transition of IPR was also found at high temperatures. This study illustrates that such a mechanical-chemical process is an effective way to improve the leaching efficiency of IPR with a lower sulfuric acid dosage, which has great potential in industrial applications.

BACKGROUND: Predicting viral suppression early is crucial to improving treatment outcomes among people living with HIV/AIDS (PLWH) in clinics. Viral suppression is affected by stress, making stress indicators a potential predictive factor. Most of previous studies used the self-report questionnaire as stress indicators, but there were great drawbacks due to its subjective. In contrast, end products of neuroendocrine systems such as hypothalamic-pituitaryadrenal (HPA) and hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal (HPG) axes and endogenous cannabinoid system (ECS) that involved in regulating stress as objective stress indicators are urgently needed to predict viral suppression. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate whether neuroendocrine indictors can strongly predict viral suppression among PLWH in China. METHODS: This cross-sectional study recruited 1198 PLWH on antiretroviral therapy (ART) in Guangxi, China. The concentrations of steroids (i.e., cortisol, cortisone, dehydroepiandrosterone, testosterone and progesterone) and endocannabinoids (i.e., N-arachidonoyl-ethanolamine and 1-arachidonyl glycerol) in hair were quantitated using the LC-APCI+-MS/MS method. To screen biomarkers that were used to predict viral suppression, association between hair biomarkers and viral suppression was examined by Mann-Whitney U test and partial correlation analyses. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves and binary logistic regression based on the optimal classification threshold determined with ROC curves were used to estimate the prediction effects of the screened biomarkers on viral suppression (HIV-1 RNA < 200 copies/mL). RESULTS: Hair levels of dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA), and N-arachidonoyl-ethanolamine (AEA), and the cortisol to DHEA ratio exhibited significant intergroup differences (ps < 0.05) and were correlated with HIV viral load (ps < 0.05). Hair DHEA concentrations strongly predicted viral suppression, showing good classification performance (area under the ROC curve = 0.651, p < 0.01) and strong predictive utility (adjusted odd ratio = 2.324, 95 % confidence interval = 1.211-4.899, p < 0.05) with an optimal threshold of 10.5 pg/mg. A hair AEA concentration of 2.4 pg/mg was the optimal threshold for predicting viral suppression based on good classification performance (area under the ROC curve = 0.598, p < 0.05) and predictive power (adjusted odd ratio = 2.124, 95 % confidence interval = 1.045-4.244, p < 0.05). In hair levels of cortisol to DHEA, viral suppression was observed to be highly predictive, with a threshold of 10.5 pg/mg being optimal for classification (area under the ROC curve = 0.624, p < 0.05) and prediction (adjusted odd ratio = 0.421, 95 % confidence interval = 0.201-0.785, p < 0.05). CONCLUSION: Hair levels of DHEA, and AEA and the cortisol to DHEA ratio were screened and verified to have significant predictive power with optimal thresholds for predicting viral suppression in a large-scale cohort. The data may provide new insights into predictors of successful virological outcomes and inform public health intervention and clinical practice to assist PLWH in achieving and sustaining viral suppression.

The present study aimed to investigate the clinical manifestations, epidemiological characteristics, and outcomes of Chinese patients with voltage-gated potassium channel complex (VGKC) antibody-associated encephalitis. Patients diagnosed with VGKC antibody-associated encephalitis at our institution between January 2016 and December 2020 were included in this study. We retrospectively evaluated their clinical features, auxiliary examination results, treatments details, long-term outcomes, and risk factors for poor outcome. Of the 91 included patients, 61 (67.78%) were men and 30 (32.97%) were women. The most common clinical symptoms were seizures (n = 63, 69.23%), memory deficits (n = 62, 68.13%), mental behavioral disorders (n = 29, 31.87%), and hyponatremia (n = 57, 62.64%). Although patients with anti- leucine-rich glioma-inactivated 1 (LGI1) (n = 76) and anti- contactin-associated protein-like 2 (CASPR2) encephalitis (n = 15) had similar clinical manifestations, the former were more diverse. In total, 86 (94.51%) patients were treated with immunotherapy. Over a median follow-up period of 25 months, there were no mortalities and 14 (15.38%) patients experienced a relapse. Univariate analysis indicated differences in sex, modified Rankin Scale scores at onset, movement disorders, central hypoventilation, and intensive care unit occupancy between the good- and poor- outcome groups. Patients with anti-LGI1 and anti-CASPR2 encephalitis showed similar clinical manifestations while presenting delineating characteristics. Those with VGKC antibody-associated diseases generally responded well to immunotherapy and demonstrated favorable clinical outcomes. Several factors affected the prognosis, and a long-term follow-up examination is necessary.

BACKGROUND: The rapid growth of inherently complex and heterogeneous data in HIV/AIDS research underscores the importance of Big Data Science. Recently, there have been increasing uptakes of Big Data techniques in basic, clinical, and public health fields of HIV/AIDS research. However, no studies have systematically elaborated on the evolving applications of Big Data in HIV/AIDS research. We sought to explore the emergence and evolution of Big Data Science in HIV/AIDS-related publications that were funded by the US federal agencies. METHODS: We identified HIV/AIDS and Big Data related publications that were funded by seven federal agencies from 2000 to 2019 by integrating data from National Institutes of Health (NIH) ExPORTER, MEDLINE, and MeSH. Building on bibliometrics and Natural Language Processing (NLP) methods, we constructed co-occurrence networks using bibliographic metadata (e.g., countries, institutes, MeSH terms, and keywords) of the retrieved publications. We then detected clusters among the networks as well as the temporal dynamics of clusters, followed by expert evaluation and clinical implications. RESULTS: We harnessed nearly 600 thousand publications related to HIV/AIDS, of which 19,528 publications relating to Big Data were included in bibliometric analysis. Results showed that (1) the number of Big Data publications has been increasing since 2000, (2) US institutes have been in close collaborations with China, Canada, and Germany, (3) some institutes (e.g., University of California system, MD Anderson Cancer Center, and Harvard Medical School) are among the most productive institutes and started using Big Data in HIV/AIDS research early, (4) Big Data research was not active in public health disciplines until 2015, (5) research topics such as genomics, HIV comorbidities, population-based studies, Electronic Health Records (EHR), social media, precision medicine, and methodologies such as machine learning, Deep Learning, radiomics, and data mining emerge quickly in recent years. CONCLUSIONS: We identified a rapid growth in the cross-disciplinary research of HIV/AIDS and Big Data over the past two decades. Our findings demonstrated patterns and trends of prevailing research topics and Big Data applications in HIV/AIDS research and suggested a number of fast-evolving areas of Big Data Science in HIV/AIDS research including secondary analysis of EHR, machine learning, Deep Learning, predictive analysis, and NLP.

BACKGROUND: Endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress is a basic cellular stress response that maintains cellular protein homeostasis under endogenous or exogenous stimuli, which depends on the stimulus, its intensity, and action time. The ER produces a corresponding cascade reaction for crosstalk of adaptive and/or pro-death regulation with other organelles. Hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC) is one of the most common malignant solid tumors with an extremely poor prognosis. Viral hepatitis infection, cirrhosis, and steatohepatitis are closely related to the occurrence and development of HCC, and ER stress has gradually been shown to be a major mechanism. Moreover, an increasing need for protein and lipid products and relative deficiencies of oxygen and nutrients for rapid proliferation and endoplasmic reticulum stress are undoubtedly involved. Therefore, to fully and comprehensively understand the regulatory role of endoplasmic reticulum stress in the occurrence and progression of HCC is of vital importance to explore its pathogenesis and develop novel anti-cancer strategies. METHODOLOGY: We searched for relevant publications in the PubMed databases using the keywords "Endoplasmic reticulum stress", "hepatocellular carcinoma" in last five years,and present an overview of the current knowledge that links ER stress and HCC, which includes carcinogenesis, progression, and anti-cancer strategies, and propose directions of future research. RESULT: ER stress were confirmed to be multiple regulators or effectors of cancer, which also be confirmed to drive tumorigenesis and progression of HCC. Targeting ER stress signaling pathway and related molecules could play a critical role for anti-HCC and has become a research hotspot for anti-cancer in recent years. CONCLUSION: ER stress are critical for the processes of the tumorigenesis and progression of tumors. For HCC, ER stress was associated with tumorigenesis, development, metastasis, angiogenesis and drug resistance, targeting ER stress has emerged as a potential anti-tumor strategy.

Nanoscale magnetic structures are fundamental to the design and fabrication of spintronic devices and have exhibited tremendous potential superior to the conventional semiconductor devices. However, most of the magnetic moments in nanostructures are unstable due to size effect, and the possible solution based on exchange coupling between nanomagnetism is still not clear. Here, graphene-mediated exchange coupling between nanomagnets is demonstrated by depositing discrete superparamagnetic Ni nano-islands on single-crystal graphene. The heterostructure exhibits ideal two-dimensional (2D) ferromagnetism with clear hysteresis loops and Curie temperature up to 80 K. The intrinsic ferromagnetism in graphene and antiferromagnetic exchange coupling between graphene and Ni nano-islands are revealed by x-ray magnetic circular dichroism and density functional theory calculations. The artificial 2D ferromagnets constitute a platform to study the coupling mechanism between complex correlated electronic systems and magnetism on the nanoscale, and the results and concept provide insights into the realization of spin manipulation in quantum computing.

Objective: This study aimed to investigate epidemiological characteristics, clinical manifestations, and long-term outcomes of patients with autoimmune encephalitis (AE) in the east of China. Methods: From January 2015 to December 2019, 226 potential AE patients were recruited from five clinical centers, and a total of 185 patients who met the diagnostic criteria were included in the study. We retrospectively reviewed clinical features, auxiliary examinations, details of treatments, and outcomes of AE, and identified risk factors of poor prognosis. Modified Rankin Scale scores were used to evaluate neurological function, and scores of 3-6 indicated a poor-prognosis. Results: Patients with five main subtypes of AE were enrolled in the study, as follows: anti-NMDAR (79), anti-LGI1 (55), anti-CASPR2 (30), anti-GABABR (16), and anti-AMPAR (5). Among 185 patients, 58.38% (108/185) were male and 41.62% (77/185) were female. The median age at disease onset was 41 years (interquartile range, 17-62). The most common clinical manifestations of AE were seizures (146, 78.92%) and memory deficit (123, 66.49%). A total of 95 (51.35%) patients had abnormal brain magnetic resonance imaging results. Electroencephalographic findings were abnormal in 131 (70.81%) patients, and 168 (90.81%) and 26 (14.05%) patients were treated with first- and second-line immunotherapies, respectively. All surviving patients were followed-up for at least 1 year (range 12-36 months). Good clinical outcomes were achieved in 117 (63.24%), while 68 (36.76%) patients had a poor prognosis. Further, 33 (17.84%) patients relapsed and 10 (5.41%) died within 1 year post-discharge. Older patients tended to have a poorer prognosis, and the occurrence of mental behavioral disorders, movement disorders, disturbance of consciousness, central hypoventilation, and tumors were overrepresented in the poor-prognosis group. Conclusions: AE is a treatable disease, and most patients have a good prognosis. There are differences in the clinical manifestations of patients with different AE subtypes. Some with AE will relapse, and long-term follow-up is of great significance for further research.

A novel three-dimensional CdII coordination framework, namely, poly[{µ-bis[4-(2-methylimidazol-1-yl)phenyl] ether-κ2N3:N3'}(µ-naphthalene-1,4-dicarboxylato-κ3O1:O4,O4')cadmium(II)], [Cd(C12H6O4)(C20H18N4O)]n or [Cd(1,4-NDC)(BMIOPE)]n, where 1,4-H2NDC is naphthalene-1,4-dicarboxylic acid and BMIOPE is bis[4-(2-methylimidazol-1-yl)phenyl] ether, has been prepared and characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, elemental analysis, IR spectroscopy and thermogravimetric analysis. The compound displays a novel fourfold interpenetrating diamond-like network. In addition, it not only shows a strong fluorescence emission in the solid state, but also exhibits excellent photocatalytic activity for the degradation of methylene blue (MB) at room temperature.
